Notes: Sir Robert Wolseley 1st Bt (1587 -1646) a cousin of the Wolseley's who were living at Wolseley and was born in nearby Morton. Second son of John Wolseley, town clerk for Stafford. Robert was an ambitious man, who progressed from working as a clerk in his father's office to becoming Joint Clerk of the Letters Patent to King Charles 1st, who created him Baronet on 24 November 1628. He acquired the estate by loaning his cousins at funds to pay off the recusant fines that they had accrued for their Catholic faith. Unable to pay back the loan Sir Thomas and Lady Helen Wolseley conceded the estate to Robert in 1629. An ardent Royalist, Robert owed his success to Charles 1st, this led to the estate being sequestered by the Parliament party in Staffordshire.
Condition: The painting has been relined and framed, under glass, unexamined out of glazed frame.
