Jerzy Nowosielski developed his own language of landscape, in which observation of reality combined with geometric simplification and far-reaching synthesis of forms. In the picture presented, the architecture and elements of the port landscape become parts of a precisely constructed composition, subject to the rhythm of lines, planes and contrasts of colours. Attention is drawn to the combination of compact construction with a fragment of the ship, whose white-red hull is clearly cut off from the dark green surroundings. Architecture, treated synthetically and with a strong contour, creates a system of almost flat geometrical forms. There is no detailed description of the place or random details: each element co-creates a thoughtful composition. A small figure on the street introduces a human scale and at the same time highlights the vastness of space and the peculiar silence of this view. The motive of the ships appeared in Novosielski's works as an echo of memories from his stay at the student camp in Międzyzdroje. In its landscapes, recognizable places and objects often became a starting point for painting synthesis, where the perspective was transformed and space gained its own logic. Here, too, architecture and ship retain their recognition, but their combination goes beyond the mere record of reality. Savings of resources, clear contours and contrasting color spots give the picture a balance between the specifics of the observed world and the autonomy of the painting vision.
