ROSENSTEIN POETIC MIKROKOSMOS Intensive red almost completely fills the image plane With the wind of 1985. In the background, irregular, light pink fields emerge, cut with delicate lines and small signs. Yellow accents illuminate the composition, bringing to mind volatile, organic forms. The space of the image also resembles landscape, a dream record and a fragment of an unknown world. Erna Rosenstein creates his own microcosm, where recognizable motives lose obvious meaning, giving way to combinations and imagination. The title "With the wind ' calls for movement, passing and elusiveness. In the works of Rosenstein, fantastic forms and fragmentary signs often come together with personal memory, but not directly into an autobiographical story. The traces in the picture that resemble fragments of architecture or illegible writing may bring to mind the experience of loss, but it is difficult to determine their direct relationship with the artist's war experiences. The tension between anxiety and lightliness is built primarily by the contrast of red, pink and yellow and the free way to drive paint. Born in 1913 in Lviv, Rosenstein studied in Vienna and Cracow. She was associated with the Krakow Group before the war, and after the war she co-founded a reactivated group. The experience of the Holocaust, in which she lost her parents, left a mark in her art, without limiting it to the subject of trauma. The artist practiced painting, collage and assemblage, paralleling the development of poetry. She died in Warsaw in 2004. Her works are found in collections of the most important Polish museums. In 2021, the Hauser & Wirth gallery, in cooperation with the Foksal Gallery Foundation, organized an exhibition in New York City: Erna Rosenstein: Once Upon a Time, presenting its work to an international audience.
