Description

A specimen of this same series of tiles is preserved today at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inventory n° BK-NM-12109), with a dating to 1480-90 and no indication of furnace; another tile en suite is instead at the Victoria and Albert Museum of London (inv. n. 30:143-1866). The attribution to a Forlive workshop is today shared while the identification of the heraldic weapon remains uncertain. The coat of arms here painted was in fact traditionally ascribed to the Ordelaffi, but such identification remains uncertain, being the correct blasoning of the weapon of the lords of Forlì 'wrapped of green and gold at the head of the same loaded of a rising lion of green'. It will also be noticed how the castle of Formigine resorts a green lion in the field of gold that was of the Pius of Savoy, princes of Carpi (AA.VV., Miscellanea of History Italy, vol. 9, Turin 1870, p. 352), and as well as the Acciaiuoli of Florence, used a lion sometimes of green shades in the gold field.
