NGC MS 62 (2414738-003).
Exceptional and extremely rare gold issue of the 20 lire of 1928, struck in the sixth year of the Fascist Era on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Victory. The type, known in the numismatic literature as the “Marshals” type, uses the dies of the contemporary silver coin, with the helmeted head of Vittorio Emanuele III on the obverse and, on the reverse, the fasces with axe and lion, accompanied by the motto MEGLIO VIVERE UN GIORNO DA LEONE CHE CENTO ANNI DA PECORA (“Better to live one day as a lion than a hundred years as a sheep”). The gold issue was not intended for monetary circulation but was produced in a very limited number of specimens to be presented to the highest-ranking figures of the State. Among the recipients were the King, the seven Marshals of Italy, the Grand Admiral, and other senior institutional figures.
Of extraordinary rarity, with only a very few specimens known, it ranks among the most prestigious and sought- after rarities of the gold coinage of Vittorio Emanuele III. Particularly significant is the different arrangement of the motto, in six lines, compared with the corresponding silver issue, an important diagnostic feature for the identification of genuine specimens.
