Description

Bologna. Benedetto XIV (Prospero Lambertini), 1740–1758. Scudo of 80 bolognini struck in gold year XVII, AV 37.20 g. ø 39 mm. BEDEDECT XIV P M BONON A XVII Bust r., wearing camauro, mozzetta and stole decorated with heraldic devices. Rev. VNVM / OMNIVM VOTVM / SALVS / PRINCIPIS / S.P.Q.B. Muntoni – (cf. 228, see note p. 273). Berman –. Chimienti – (cf. note p. 421 no. 883). MIR 2635/3. Of the highest rarity, possibly the only specimen in private hands. An issue of great importance and fascination perfectly struck. Minor scratches on obverse field and two small edge nicks, otherwise extremely fine Benedict XIV (Bologna, 1675 – Rome, 1758), Archbishop of Bologna from 1731, was elected pope on 17 August 1740. His connection to his native city remained strong even after his election to the papal throne, so much so that the pontiff retained the title and governance of the Archdiocese of Bologna until 1754. The Bologna mint celebrated the election of the pope with several commemorative issues. Particularly significant is the coinage, consisting of silver scudi, minted to commemorate the decision of Benedict XIV to retain the Archdiocese of Bologna even after his elevation to the papacy. The issue, characterized by a design more properly medallic than monetary, represents one of the most interesting testimonies of the special relationship between the pope and his native city. The legend on these specimens significantly emphasizes the dual dignity of Benedict XIV as pope and Archbishop of Bologna, while the dedication by the Senate of Bologna reflects his privileged relationship with the city. These issues belong to the production of the Bologna mint during the pontificate of this pope, in which monetary function was joined with a commemorative purpose, giving rise to specimens of notable historical and numismatic interest. The scudi were struck in gold to be presented as gifts to the pope and his nephew. Please find here the video of the coin
