Born on 10 April 1480 to Philip II and Margaret of Bourbon, at barely fourteen years old he accompanied his father following the King of France, Charles VIII, on the expedition to conquer the Kingdom of Naples. In 1496 he received Bresse as an appanage from his father and, upon the latter's death, ascended the throne under the regency of Bianca of Montferrat. Son of Philip II (known as Landless) and Margaret of Bourbon, Philibert ascended the ducal throne in 1497, at just seventeen years of age, following the premature passing of his father. Educated at the French court under the guidance of King Charles VIII, Philibert came to power during a time of severe geopolitical instability, marked by the beginning of the Italian Wars. The true turning point in Philibert II's reign came in 1501 with his second marriage to Margaret of Austria, daughter of Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg and sister of Philip the Handsome. Under her guidance, the Savoyard State enjoyed a rare period of peace and economic prosperity, with the court becoming a refined center of Renaissance patronage.
