During the pontificate of Pius IX, important reforms were undertaken in the organization and accommodation of Rome’s psychiatric care. In 1850, the Roman hospitals were placed under a single administrative commission, while efforts were made to provide the psychiatric hospital with a more suitable hospital structure. The existing facilities were subsequently enlarged and reorganized, culminating in the construction of a new hospital complex at the Lungara.
