In the Dutch city of Nijmegen, on 10 August 1678, peace was stipulated between France, the United Provinces of Holland, Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire, ending the war between these nations that had begun in 1672. The Pope, through his legate, acted as the promoter of energetic mediation efforts among the belligerent powers, above all with an anti-Turkish focus. He considered that the greatest danger for Europe – as would indeed occur a few years later – was an increasingly foreseeable Ottoman invasion of the West, and that a lack of unity would prove disastrous for the European States. Only through a prospective European alliance would the Western nations possess the necessary forces to counter the armies of the Sultan; thus, thanks also to the diplomatic mediation of the Holy See, the signing of the peace treaty was achieved. Innocent XI was greatly relieved by this, seeing his justified concerns regarding the Turkish threat recede. Please find here the video of the coin
