Elected to the papacy in 1503, Julius II was one of the most forceful figures of the Italian Renaissance. A man of strong character and considerable political ability, he sought to strengthen the Papal States and recover territories under papal rule, intervening directly in the political and military affairs of the Italian peninsula. His pontificate was also marked by important artistic patronage: he commissioned Michelangelo to decorate the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and promoted the rebuilding of St Peter’s Basilica, begun in 1506. In numismatic terms, his coinage reflects the prestige and political programme of the Church at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Many of his coin portraits convey the energetic character of the pope; like other rulers of the Italian states, he entrusted the execution of his dies to accomplished engravers, among them Pier Maria da Pescia.
