The reverse of this extremely rare coin commemorates the pardon granted by Charles V to the Neapolitans who had rebelled in 1547 against the viceroy Pedro de Toledo, following his attempt to introduce the Tribunal of the Inquisition in Naples. Violent clashes broke out between the populace and the Spanish troops, but ultimately good sense prevailed, and a delegation of Neapolitan nobles travelled to Madrid to seek the emperor’s clemency. The pardon was granted by an act dated 23 October 1547. As a penalty, however, the city was required to pay a fine of 100,000 gold ducats, in return for which Charles V undertook that the Inquisition would never be introduced in Naples.
