During the reign of Philip IV, the Duchy of Milan represented the imperial strategic pivot of the Spanish Crown in continental Europe. Known as the keystone of the so-called "Camino Español" (the Spanish Road), Milan served as a crucial logistical and military hub for the passage of troops, funding, and supplies from the Iberian peninsula to Flanders and the theatres of war in Northern Europe. In the monetary sphere, the Milan mint reflected the formal grandeur of Habsburg power. Under Philip IV, coins of exceptional prominence were struck, such as silver ducatoni and double ducatoni, in addition to gold multiples (doppie and quadruple). The coinage iconography of Philip IV celebrates kingship and dynastic legitimacy: the sovereign is portrayed wearing the typical Spanish ruff collar and military armour.
