Following his conquest of the Duchy of Milan in 1499, Louis XII became an important subject of Milanese medallic art. His portrait was treated in the distinctive Renaissance manner established by the great Italian medallists of the fifteenth century, transforming the ruler’s likeness into an instrument of dynastic and political representation.
This gold commemorative medal, struck at the Milanese mint in the early sixteenth century, belongs to the remarkable group of medallic productions associated with French rule in Milan. The choice of gold, together with the large format and refined portraiture, indicates that it was intended as a prestigious commemorative or presentation. The sharply modelled profile and carefully rendered costume reflect the continuing vitality of the Milanese Renaissance tradition, now employed to celebrate the French sovereign.
