The figure of Gian Galeazzo Maria Sforza (1469–1494) embodies one of the most complex and dramatic phases in the history of Milan, suspended between the peak of artistic splendour in the Renaissance and the political fragility that would lead to the Italian Wars. Eldest son of Galeazzo Maria Sforza and Bona of Savoy, Gian Galeazzo inherited the title of sixth Duke of Milan in 1476, at the age of only seven, following the dramatic assassination of his father at the hands of a conspiracy of Milanese nobles. Given the sovereign's very young age, the government was initially assumed by his mother, the regent duchess Bona of Savoy, assisted by the able and faithful ducal secretary Cicco Simonetta. The stability of the regency was soon undermined by the ambitions of the young Duke's uncles, in particular Ludovico Maria Sforza, known as "il Moro". In 1480, through a political coup, Il Moro succeeded in having Cicco Simonetta executed, removing the regent Bona of Savoy, and assuming guardianship of his nephew as well as effective control of the Duchy.
