Ferdinando Gonzaga (1587–1626), Duke of Mantua and Montferrat, 1612–1626. The sixth Duke of Mantua, Ferdinando succeeded his elder brother Francesco IV in 1612. Originally destined for an ecclesiastical career, he abandoned the Church and assumed the ducal succession. His reign was marked by financial difficulties and the political tensions surrounding the Gonzaga succession. He married Camilla Faà di Bruno morganatically in 1616, although the marriage was not recognised as dynastically valid; in 1621 he married Caterina de’ Medici, daughter of Ferdinand I, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Ferdinando died in 1626 without legitimate issue and was succeeded by his younger brother Vincenzo II.
His coinage reflects the continued monetary traditions of the Gonzaga state, with issues struck for Mantua and Montferrat bearing his titles and heraldic devices. His relatively brief reign makes his coins of particular interest to collectors of early seventeenth-century Mantuan and Montferrat coinage.
