The figure of Marc'Antonio Zondadari (1720–1722), Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, represents a moment of great diplomatic prestige and administrative rigour for the island of Malta in the early eighteenth century, despite his very brief magistracy. Born in Siena in 1658 into an illustrious patrician family whose ancestors included Pope Alexander VII Chigi, Zondadari joined the Knights of St. John at a very young age, gaining extensive military experience in naval operations in the Mediterranean and holding the post of General of the Galleys from 1709. Upon the death of Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful, Zondadari was elected head of the Order on 13 January 1720. Zondadari died suddenly on 16 June 1722, and his remains lie in the majestic Baroque bronze and marble tomb inside St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta.
