Are the different sizes of the heads of Mark Antony and his brother Lucius on the two sides of this denarius an indication of the pecking order within the gens Antonia? Lucius was the youngest of three brothers and served as consul in 41 BC, a post he no doubt obtained with a little help from his imperatorial brother. Nevertheless, he showed a strongly independent mind during his year in office, opposing Octavian's policy of settling veterans on confiscated plots of land in Italy ("Is a godless soldier to hold these well-tilled fallows? a barbarian these crops?", Virgil, Eclogues 1.70–71) and became a champion of the small local landowners. The conflict grew into the Perusine War, which led to severe friction between Octavian and Mark Antony and to Lucius's eventual removal to Spain and his swift, unexplained death there.
