Tetradrachm (Silver, 29.5 mm, 16.82 g, 12 h), New style "stephanephoric" coinage, struck under the magistrates Timarchos, Nikago(ras), Menandros and Phil..., 134/3. Helmed head of Athena Parthenos to right. Rev. Α-ωΕ / ΤΙΜ-ΑΡΝΟ / ΝΙΚΑΙΝ / ΜΕΝΑΝ/ΔΡΦ / ΦΙΑ Owl standing to right, head facing, on amphora lying on its side; in the field to left, chief magistrate's symbol: anchor and star; on amphora, γ (= 9th month); below amphoras, θΦ (= contractor's initials); all within an olive weather. Thompson 368 var. (unlisted reverse the), but cf. 365c for a similar reverse, albeit lacking ΦΙA. For a tetradrachm struck briefly before this issue with the fourth magistrate, cf. Thompson 348i. For another piece struck from the same reverse die, see Triton XIV, 4 January 2011, 208. To unpublished variety. Very well-struck and clear. Extremely fine. Athenian New Style tetradrachms in their fully developed form generally bear the names of three magistrates. Two are senior bureaucrats and one is a junior, probably the person doing the most work! The fact that this coin certainly has four names makes it quite special! There are two possible reasons for this: 1) a fourth junior magistrate was honored for some reason - perhaps because a collective died in the middle of his office; or, 2) there was some confusion about who, actually the third magist rate - Menandros - was, so it was decided to add his patronymic "son of Phil..." to make it clear which menandros it was.
