Description

From the Collection of General Berthier de La Garde KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip V, 221-179 BC. Drachm (Silver, 20 mm, 4.24 g, 11 h), Pella, with Zoilos as chief mintmaster, circa 184-179. Diademed head of Philip V to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟΥ Horizontal club with head to right; above, monogram of ΖΩ; below, monograms of ΜΕ and ΜΑΛ (?); all within an oak wreath with ties at the left; in the field to left, tripod. HGC 3, 1060. Mamroth, Philip 28. Rare. Nicely toned and well-centered. About extremely fine. From a private collection in Switzerland, ex Jacquier 50, 16 September 2022, 78, and from the collection of "Général A.L. Berthier de La Garde", Naville V, 18 June 1923, 1470. Philip V issued an extensive series of coins bearing his portrait on the obverse and, on the reverse a club within an oak wreath; the most common denomination was the didrachm, with the drachms (as here) and hemidrachms being much scarcer. This coin was once in the famous collection of General (of military engineering) Alexander L'vovich Berthier de La Garde (1842-1920), who was born in Sebastopol into a military family; he spent much of his life supervising engineering projects around the Black Sea (i.e., coastal defences, reconstruction work to repair the damages from the Crimean War, etc.). Upon his retirement in 1887 he devoted the rest of his life to the study of history and archaeology. He amassed a very large collection of ancient objects - as well as coins - relating to his home area; during his lifetime he was a major donor to museums around the Black Sea. He seems to have died when Crimea was under the control of the White Russian general Denikin, but his family managed to get his collections out no later than the great evacuations organized by General Pyotr Wrangel in November 1920 (his sister sold a collection of antiquities to the British Museum; she sold his coins to Spink's, who then consigned them to the Naville sale).
