Description
KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 17.05 g, 12 h), Smyrna, circa 287/6-282/1. Diademed head of Alexander III to right, with a ram’s horn over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated to left on a kippos, resting her left elbow on her shield and holding Nike, standing left and crowning the king's name in her outstretched right hand; behind, transverse spear; in the outer left field, Φ; in inner left field, turreted head of Tyche to right. HGC 3.2, 1750o. Müller 408. Thompson 237. A very rare variety, known from only a few examples; with a bold and stylistically fine portrait of Alexander. Minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the Down-Under Collection, ex Papillon 7, 11 July 2021, 14.
Smyrna only struck a very limited coinage under Lysimachos: Thompson only knew of eight tetradrachms, all from the same dies. Since she wrote the total has increased, but, nevertheless, this is probably one of Lysimachos's rarest tetradrachm mints.
