Struck from dies of the very finest early Hellenistic style, with a noble and emotionally serious portrait of Alexander. Extremely fine. From the Down-Under Collection, and from the collection of Clive Shute, Noble 109, 30 July 2015, 3586, acquired from C.J.Martin Coins Ltd., in London on 2 June 1994. There are so many tetradrachms of Lysimachos! In Hellenistic times their horned portraits of Alexander and their dignified figures of Athena made them both very popular and commercially important. Stylistically they range from the heights of Hellenistic portraiture, as here, to curious caricatures that, nearly two-hundred years later, were modified into disguised portraits of Mithridates VI! What we have here is, without question, one of the best of all the Alexander heads to appear on a coin of Lysimachos. The emotional intensity – pathos – that radiates from this head is a triumph of engraving skill. https://cdn.nomosag.com/auctions/95/video00139.mp4?sv=2023-01-03&ss=b&srt=co&st=2025-03-10T16%3A25%3A27Z&se=2099-03-11T16%3A25%3A00Z&sp=rl&sig=i7RzFAqwYGMJUp3u71BbRyL3HhIAtR%2F8cUnRnTVQfyU%3D&rsct=video%2Fmp4
