Description
CELTIC. Central Europe. Boii. Busumarus, Mid-late 1st century BC. Hexadrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.35 g, 2 h), struck in southwestern Slovakia. Celtisized male bust to left, with his hair tied in a knot; branch in the left field. Rev. BVSV Winged centaur standing to left, turning his head to right. Castelin 1161. CCCBM III 249. Dembski 627-9. Flee 491. Göbl, Hex., IV-1/28. Paulsen 785-9. Lanz 72-3. Toned; of the highest rarity and with a particularly unusual mythological creature. Carefully centered but with flat areas, otherwise, good very fine. Who or what Busumarus? No ancient historian or document opinions him; all we have been coins inscribed with his name. These are long to a group of coins wearing 14 different names, probably minded in an oppidum on what is today the castle hill of Bratislava, Slovakia. The men (?) named on the coins may have been "kings" or tribal leaders. Remarkably, during the time of the Ottoman occupation of large parts of Hungary, the Habsburg kings of Hungary were crowned just below this very hill and the Crown of Saint Stephen was kept safe in the castle itself. The insight of the hill for royalty might very well have started with Busumarus!
