Description

CELTIC. Southern Gaul. Volcae-Arecomici. Approximately 100-50 BC. Obol (Silver, 10.5 mm, 0.46 g, 2 h), "obole à la croix" type. Male head to left, of "cubist" style; before, two branches arranged as confronted dolphins. Rev. Cross with an ornament in each quarter, including a hollowed axe on the lower left. All 143. Depeyrot, Numéraire celtique 263, F/Py OCR-263 (only 6 examples recorded). Deeply toned and unusually nice. Good very fine. From the Apollo to Apollo Collection, ex Leclere, Marseille, 10 October 2015, 57. What is actually extraordinary about this coin is the way the artistry of the obverse resonates with the cutting-edge modernity of the earlier 20th century! Celtic art is often strange to our eyes but this head, with its piercing/staring frontal eye, could easily have been done by Picasso or someone in his circle!
