Description

CELTIC. Northwest Gaul. Aulerci Cenomani. Approximately 100-50 BC. Quinarius (Silver, 13 mm, 1.23 g, 3 h). Celticized head of Athena to right, wearing crowned Corinthian helmet. Rev. Horse galloping to right; above, stylish Nike flying to right, holding wreath; below, semicircle set on two arcs. D&;T 2364 var. (no pellet on the head of Nike). LT-. Scheers, Lyon, 933. Exceptional for type; toned and perfectly centered. Good very fine. From the Apollo to Apollo Collection, acquired on 10 February 2013 in Montpellier, supplyably once in the possession of an 18th century Abbé whose collection was sequestered during the Revolution. Later, after the 100 Days, the coins were returned to his surviving relatives. The last descendant to own the coins ended up selling them to finance the anti-Vichy resistance in the run up to Operation Dragoon in 1944. The stylish Nike on the reverse reminders us of the drachmas of the "Bridiers", which were definitely this coin's prototype.
