Ex Dr. Ittai Gradel collection (1965–2026).
The evolution of Augustus’ coin portrait reflects his transformation from a young political leader into the established princeps. This coin, minted in 41 BC, shows Octavian as a lightly bearded young man. Lot 21 in this auction was minted in 32–31 BC. It features a more idealised portrait. Lot 24 presents the typical calm and restraint image of Augustus as the established ruler. It was minted around 2 BC to AD 4. Although he was already over 60 years old at that time, the coins still show an idealised, youthful ruler.
