Description
COINS OF THE ROMAN CAISER TIME. Claudius, 41-54, and Agrippina filia. AV-Aureus, 50/54, Rome; 7,6 g. Head of Claudius r. with laurel wreath//draped bust of Agrippina r., with head wrench. BMC 72; Calicó 396 c; Coh. 3; RIC2 80. R fields easily cleaned, very nice The image of the younger Agrippina is still heavily influenced by the devastating judgment of ancient historiography. Sueton (Claudius, 26.3), for example, reports that Agrippina had actively caused the shameful marriage relationship with her uncle Claudius by making "his charms completely in love with him". The emperor is primarily represented as a passive recipient of female commands. In fact, Claudius was as interested in the connection as Agrippina. Claudius was also able to legitimize his rule through her descent from the Jewish imperial house. The relationship between Agrippina and her son Nero is also characterized by various recurring topoi. Thus, an incestuous relationship between mother and son was speculated (Tacitus, Ann. 14,9). In addition, after three attacks with poison and a staged boat accident had not led to her death, Nero ordered her murder directly and made it look like a suicide (Sueton, Nero, 34.2-5). Agrippina thus becomes the projection surface of the senatory historiography, which on the one hand rejected Nero as emperor, on the other hand politically active women.
