Description
A stunning, finely crafted mid-Victorian serpent necklace, the serpent's head set with numerous old cut diamonds and ruby cabochon eyes, with the mouth and teeth forming the clasp. The articulated body and the tail of the snake which forms the main part of the necklace is set throughout with pearls and with diamonds towards the clasp.
The three diamonds (one round and two of rough oval form) on the head of the snake measure approx 3.75mm diameter, 5.5mm x 4.5mm, and 5.0mm x 4.4mm. Length unclasped 44.7cm. Gross weight 45.4g. XRF testing suggest the head is approx 14ct gold, the tail approx 18ct gold.
Condition: Several pearls near the base of the tail are missing or worn. One very small diamond on the side of the head is missing. The three main diamonds on the head are in good condition with no eye visible inclusions, Due to the setting we cannot ascertain the colour but they appear lively, A few of the smaller diamonds with small nibbles, a couple with larger chips.
