Description

The 1989 BMW Alpina B6 3.5S is a version modified by Alpina, based in Buchloe, based on the BMW E30 M3. Alpina has worked closely with BMW since the 1960s and was officially recognized as an independent automaker in 1983. The B6 3.5S was produced in a very limited run of just 62 units between October 1987 and January 1991. The example offered here is number 42 in this series. The B6 3.5S clearly distinguishes itself, both technically and visually, from the standard BMW models of the same period. Whereas the regular BMW E30 M3 was equipped with the four-cylinder S14 engine from BMW Motorsport GmbH, Alpina replaced this powerplant with an inline-six engine featuring two valves per cylinder and a duplex timing chain, based on BMW technology and developed in accordance with the Group N regulations for motorsports in effect at the time. With a bore of 92.0 mm and a stroke of 86 mm, this resulted in a displacement of 3,430 cc. The engine had a compression ratio of 10.0:1 and delivered 254 pk (187 kW) of power and 320 Nm of torque. Alpina made several technical modifications: • Replacement of the standard connecting rods with longer steel connecting rods • Shorter Mahle pistons with higher-mounted piston pins • Completely redesigned cylinder head with precisely machined combustion chambers • Electric cooling fan instead of a viscous clutch • Bosch Motronic engine management with two different mappings (S and N modes), selectable via a switch above the radio • Overrun fuel cut-off system • Interchangeable and programmable chip (optional), which allowed for a sportier driving character • Stainless-steel Alpina exhaust manifold and exhaust system with wider pipes • Three-way catalytic converter with heated lambda sensor The chassis remained essentially the same as that of the standard BMW E30 M3. However, the wheels and tires were replaced with specific Alpina wheels in the size 8J x 16 inches, fitted with Michelin MXX tires in the size 225/45/16. The rear axle ratio was 2.79:1 (compared to 3.25:1 on the standard M3), combined with a 25% limited-slip differential. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h was achieved in 6.6 seconds. Chassis Numbers and Catalytic Converter Chassis numbers beginning with: • BA20: version without a catalytic converter • BA50 / BA60: version with a catalytic converter Standard equipment The standard equipment of the Alpina B6 3.5S included, among other things: • ABS • ALPINA striping (silver or gold, as desired) • Central locking • Power front windows • Hand-stitched leather sports steering wheel (380 mm diameter) • Sports seats • Interior fabric with asymmetrical blue and green stripes • Digital display for engine oil temperature, rear axle temperature, and intake pressure • Driver’s footrest • Rosewood gearshift knob • Stereo radio-cassette system with four speakers • Silver-plated nameplate with production number • ALPINA 8x16-inch wheels with Michelin MXX tires (225/45/16) The base price of the Alpina B6 3.5S at the time was: 98,000 DM (€50,106) Optional equipment (additional cost) • Metallic paint: 950 DM (€486) • ALPINA special paint (blue or green): 4,120 DM (€2,107) • ALPINA Digital Cockpit (in left air vent): 1,350 DM (€690) • Air conditioning: 3,650 DM (€1,866) • Electric steel sunroof: 1,670 DM (€854) • Rear window vent: 240 DM (€123) • Headlight wiper and washer system: 695 DM (€355) • Onboard computer: 585 DM (€300) • Cruise control: 675 DM (€345) • Alcantara interior: 5,900 DM (€3,017) In addition, the standard BMW factory options were also available. Not available The following options could not be ordered: • Tow hitch • Parking heater Alpina customers had to forgo these features. Specific vehicle This BMW Alpina B6 3.5S was delivered new in Switzerland and comes in the color Macau Blue. The odometer reading is 115,735 km, which, given the vehicle’s age, can be considered relatively modest. The car is in running condition. Both the interior and exterior appear well-maintained. The vehicle has been in the possession of a collector for a long time, which contributes to its overall condition and presentation. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend that you attend the viewing day. ⸻ Source: https://m-flight-europe.com/en/all-about-the-bmw-e30/alpina-b6-3-5-s-en-translation/
