History and Background
The Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan is a model from Studebaker’s final years of production and thus represents the final phase of an American automaker with a long history. In December 1964, production ended in South Bend, Indiana, after which the manufacture of Studebakers continued in Hamilton, Ontario. The 1966 Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan is part of the brand’s final year of production and marks the end of 114 years of Studebaker. During that final phase, Canadian production took on a character of its own, partly because the familiar Studebaker engines were no longer available.
As a result, GM powertrains were chosen for the Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan. This made the model technically distinct within Studebaker’s history, but it remained recognizable as part of the Daytona line. Production numbers in 1966 were limited; only 620 units of the Sports Sedan were built. This fact makes the Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan a rare sight among postwar American mid-range cars, especially since so few examples are known to exist today. The model thus occupies a unique place in the history of both Studebaker and the Canadian automotive industry.
The Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan also represents a transitional period during which a traditional American brand produced its final models under changing circumstances. The combination of Canadian assembly, the final model years, and the limited production numbers gives the car a distinct historical significance. For collectors and enthusiasts of brand history, it is precisely this final phase of Studebaker that is of particular interest, as this period showcases the brand’s final evolution in a production context.
Features and Details
This Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan is equipped with an original Chevrolet 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 230 cubic inches. The car also has a three-speed manual transmission with steering-wheel-mounted shifters. In 1966, front disc brakes and rear drum brakes were standard on the Daytona. Thus, the Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan aligns with the technical solutions that were common in the mid-range segment during that period, while the engine supplied by GM is a specific characteristic of Canadian production.
The Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan is in superb original condition and comes from a collector. The owner’s manual is included. The car was imported from the United States in 2012 and has been registered with the Dutch license plate AR-64-59. Combined with the limited production in 1966 and the rarity of the model, this contributes to the special status of this Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan within the classic American car market.
Summary
The 1966 Studebaker Daytona Sports Sedan is a rare, Canadian-produced late-model Studebaker, featuring an original Chevrolet 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine, a three-speed manual transmission with steering wheel-mounted shifters, and a known production run of only 620 units. The car has a Dutch license plate, was imported from the United States in 2012, and comes with an owner’s manual. To get a good idea of the lot, we recommend that you attend the viewing day.
