Kate Nicholson (British, 1929-2019) Untitled signed and dated 'Kate Nicholson/62' (on sheet verso) oil, gouache and chalk on paper 38.8 x 57cm (15 1/4 x 22 7/16in). In the early 1960s Kate Nichoson's work moved away from still life and became more gestural and expressive. In this she was inspired by the abstract artists she knew in St Ives, where she was living, and her first trips to Greece. Many of these works were exhibited in her second exhibition at the Waddington Galleries in 1962, for example see Thola's Tomb (Kettle's Yard, Cambridge). Untitled expresses a sense of delight in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, and her deep enjoyment of Greek culture. We are grateful to Jovan Nicholson for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
