Oil painting, 46 x 66 cm (61 x 80,5 cm with frame) signed Hugo Charlemont comes from a famous Austrian artist family. He was the son of a successful miniature portraitist. The painters Eduard Charlemont (1848–1906) and Theodor Charle Mont (1859–1938) were his brothers. Hugo's daughter Lilly Charlemont (1890–1975) was also an artist. From 1873, Hugo Charlemont studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna as a student of Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. Arthur William Unger taught him the printing technique and the art of etching. He continued his artistic training with his brother Eduard and Hans Makart. Charlemont travelled to Holland for studies and spent several years in Venice. Hugo Charlemont is the character model of the painter van Helmond in the novel Der Mann ohne Qualitäten by Robert Musil. The novel also features the painter's daughter Alice as Clarisse. Hugo Charlemont captivates with his shining landscape paintings, which are held in Impressionism. Especially the motifs from the surroundings of Vienna and Lower Austria always impressed the artist and inspired him to his works.
