Magnificently illustrated mythological and emblematic work of determination, each sheet with an abundance of fantastic, grotesque, political and allegorical figures and allusions. "Though not strictly an emblem-book, it contains so much allegoral material that it is in it's right place in a collection of emblem books" (Landwehr, Dutch 94). "Hooghe is the most important and shiny Representatives of the Dutch late Baroque with its accumulation of strong effects, its striving for expression and character, not even deterring from the 'hate'; baroque is also the feeling of space with the plastic elaboration of the physical and the deep effect" (Thieme-Becker). – Initially weakly brown-spotted. Very nice and well preserved specimen, with the mostly missing final page "Remembrance to the bookbinder".
