In 1758, in his 'Practical Philosophy for All Estates', Basedow had derived man's happiness and charitableness as the ultimate educational goal from the philosophy of enlightenment, so he went a step further in this work and called for the establishment of non-denominational schools and an education in the spirit of enlightenment (cf. LdKJ I, 110). To this end, he confronted the Christian religion of revelation with a natural religion that remained strictly within the limits of reason and developed from here his anthropology and epistemology. The work aroused such a stir that Basedow "was soon denounced from all sides as a heretic ... The authorities were urged to intervene against him, even the lower people were provoked against him ...; after all, his writings were confiscated and he was forbidden to have anything printed in Hamburg" (ADB II, 116). – Wide-range, uncircumcised specimen.
