It was owned by the princes of Auersperg, who, like the counts of Buquoy, had their possessions held in Bohemia by Alt in Aquarell. In the 19th century, the Bohemian castle experienced significant changes. In the 1840s, on behalf of Prince Vincenz Charles of Auersperg (1812-1867), it was converted from a baroque residence into a romantic medieval knight's castle in the style of English neo-Gothicism. This new building shows this work. From a low point of view, Alt painted the main entrance of the extensive complex. The unusually narrow, very close-sighted section of the picture, which only shows a part of the front view, is particularly appealing. With the help of this bold perspective and brushstroke, the artist achieved the effect of a snapshot that captivates with dynamism and documentary truth. (MS)
