Maximilianzimmer in Schloss Rosenberg (Südböhmen)
1854Signed and dated lower right: R. Old (1)854
Private property, Germany;
Dorotheum Wien, 11.10.2011, Nr. 153; < Br>Private ownership, EuropeSchloss Rosenberg (Rožmberk) on the Vltava in southern Bohemia was owned by de Longueval, Count of Buquoy. From 1853, Alt received a large commission from the Count, whose castle and interior decoration to paint, and in August of this year the first watercolours were created. Until 1858, Alt created the impressive number of 35 interior views. Arthur Roessler said aptly about Alts Intrieurs: "... that you simply have to look at these interiors in order to be astonished to see that Alt is one of the greatest interior painters ever, as he is even one of his greatest painters, a 'Allahseer' and a 'All Painter' as he liked to call himself from an acquaintance." Aristocracy gained a special reputation. It belonged to the good tone to know his possessions painted by him.
... "The magnificent location and furnishings capture Alt completely when he arrives at Rosenberg Castle. The beauty of the antique furniture, the valuable weapons, vessels, jugs, everything - which even includes the uncannyness of a huge thunderstorm that pours itself with all its might on the towering castle - he would rather leave all this to his products, he says in a letter to his wife." (See Koschatzky, 2001, p. 212-214)
