Description
Rudolf von Alt
View on Naples from the northwest with Vesuvius in the background Aquarell on paper; framedSigned at the bottom right: R Alt;Private property, AustriaIn the spring of 1867 Rudolf travelled from Alt to Italy. ==References== He arrived in Rome on 1 April, where he spent the Holy Week. After that, he went on to his actual destination, Sicily, where he arrived on 14 July. ==References== This stay was not under a good star, on the 15th century. In a letter, Alt first mentioned that cholera had erupted in the vicinity of Palermo. This disease spread throughout Sicily and became an epidemic. ==References====External links== The artist also suffered from the dreaded plague in the area near Naples. He remained in medical care for several weeks and was greatly weakened by the fever. ==References== He was finally released from quarantine on September 15 and was able to enter Naples. (See Koschatzky, 2001, p. 235ff). After these turbulent months for the artist, he was born on the 4th of July. Brown, blue, green and shades of grey dominate the watercolor and create a monochrome effect, which, however, gets the greatest liveliness due to the light flashing through the clouds. The figures in the foreground are sketched fleetingly, as are the sky steeply covered with clouds. The leaf has nothing stiffer, Vedutian, but rather the view of the city with the Vesuvius in the background, like a snapshot in which the clouds move over the sky, and the noise of the sea becomes noticeable. (MS)
