Description

MACEDONIA. NEAPOLIS. AR-Stater, 525/450 B.C. ==References== 9.55 g. Gorgoneion//Four-divided incusum. Hoover 583; SNG ANZ 406. Magnificent patina, good very nice Exemplar of the Fritz Rudolf Künker 158 auction, Osnabrück 2009, No. 155. In Neapolis (today's Kavalla), the Apostle Paul first entered the soil of Europe (Acts 16, II).The main image of Neapoli coins, the Gorgoneion, was previously also coined in Athens for several years. In the migration of the motif from Athens to the Macedonian Neapolis, Florian Haymann recognizes the influence of Athens on northern Macedonia, see Haymann, F., Political and other interpretations of Gorgoneia on coins, in: OZeAN 4 (2022), pp. 1-23, bes. S. 8 with note. 37.
