Description

MACEDONIA. SKIONE. AR-Tetradrachme, 480/470 B.C. ==References== 16.63 g. Head of the protesilaos r. with helmet//in Incusum: back of the ship. Hoover 668; Mildenberg/Hurter, Dewing Coll. 1076. R Fine tint, reverse min. cleaned, very nice Protesilaos from Phylake (Thessaly) is the first Greek to lose his life in the Trojan War in the fight against the Trojans (Homer, Ilias 2, 698-702). He is killed directly at the landing of the fleet on the coast of Troy, after he himself has already brought down several Trojan soldiers. Whoever kills him is different depending on the source: on the one hand Aeneas comes into question, other traditions suggest Hektor, Euphorbos, Agates or Kyknos. With this piece, the Polis Skione refers to Protesilaos as its mythological founder (see Hoover, Oliver: Handbook of Coins of Macedonia and Its Neighbors, Part I: Macedonia, Illyria and Epeiros, London/Lancaster 2016, p. 248).
