Description

COINS OF THE ROMAN CAISER TIME. Nero, 54-68. AV-Aureus, 64/65, Rome; 7.3 g. Head r. with laurel wreath//Jupiter sits l. with lightning and scepter. BMC 67; Calicó 412 b; Coh. 118; RIC2 52. Min. rough surface, cl. Marginal error, almost excellent Exemplary of the Bertolami Fine Arts ACR 16, Rome 2015, No. 484 and the Bertolami Fine Arts E-Auction ACR 92, London 2020, No. 1145. The so-called Pisonic conspiracy in 65 was the attempt of some senators around Gaius Calpurnius Piso to murder Nero during the festival. According to Tacitus, this project has failed due to the lack of secrecy of some co-operators (see Tac. Ann. 15, 54). So after Nero could be saved from his death shortly before the assassination, after many executions he consecrated a dagger on the Capitol (see Tac. Ann. 15, 74). This piece no longer shows Iupiter as a mere victor over the conspiracy, but increased as a guard over the emperor as a result of this incident.
