Description

COINS OF THE ROMAN CAISER TIME. Titus, 79-81 for Divus Vespasianus. Æ-Sesterz, 80/81, Rome; 27.06 g. Divus Vespasianus in elephant quadriga r. with scepter and Victoria//SC. BMC 221; Coh. 205; RIC2 257. R Dark green patina, fields slightly smoothed, very nice Exemplary of the Hannelore Scheiner collection; the auction Lanz 94, Munich 1999, No. 334 and the auction Fritz Rudolf Künker 288, Osnabrück 2017, No. 494. The Elephant Quadriga (or Elephants Biga) has been a symbol of victory since Hellenistic times. It rarely appears on Augustus' coins and on two later rich Roman coins of the Julian-Claudian dynasty, but in both cases with explicit reference to Augustus (see Wiegels, Quod viae munitae sunt - Historical notes on an aureus of calcareous giants, in: Wiegels, R. (eds.), The finds of limestone giants and the early imperial coinage, Möhnesee 2000, 205 et seq.). After the end of the Julian-Claudian dynasty the reference to Augustus or Divus Augustus can now be omitted, in its place occurs on our piece Divus Vespasianus.
