Description
COINS OF THE ROMAN CAISER TIME. Domitianus, 81-96. AR-Denar, 82/83, Rome; 3.52 g. Head r. with laurel wreath//adler stands v. v. on lightning, head l. BMC 52; Coh. 320; RIC2 144. Graffito on the cross, otherwise excellent Exemplary of the auction Hirsch Nachf. 287, Munich 2013, No 2239. Domitianus was particularly committed to the Jupiter Conservator; he dedicated a temple and an altar to him (Tac. H. III. 74). Domitian thus thanked God for his salvation from the Capitol in 69. After the abdication of Vitellius, his followers wanted to undo them and attacked the followers of Vespasian, among whom Domitian also resided, on the Capitol and burned it down. Domitian had already hidden himself at the beginning of the rush in the house of a temple keeper and escaped in the linen dress of an Isis priest. On the spot where the temple keeper's house had stood, Domitian had a small sanctuary built as Caesar in honor of the Jupiter Conservator.
