Description

COINS OF THE ROMAN CAISER TIME. Antoninus I. Pius, 138-161. AV-Aureus, 138, Rome; 7,42 g. Head r.//Pietas stands l. with incense can and raised right, in front of the altar. BMC 30; Calicó 1475; Coh. -; RIC 14 a. Magnificent copies. Excellent Stample Shine Exemplary of the auction Bank Leu 10, Zurich 1974, No. 163; the auction NAC & Jesús Vico S. A. 119, Zurich 2020, No 64; the sale Fritz Rudolf Künker 382, Osnabrück 2023, No 440 and the auction Fritz Rudolf Kuenker 419, Osnagrück 2025, No 453. Pietas was particularly highlighted on the gold coins of Antoninus Pius, unlike on the coins in silver and bronze, where Pietas played a minor role. The propagandist message of the Pietas was thus addressed to the elites. The title "Pius" had been awarded to the emperor by the Senate. This piece, marked at the beginning of the emperor's reign, clearly refers to the award of the title and thus shows the support of the Senate for the emperor. For the Pietas on the Aurei of Antoninus Pius see Rowan, Clare, Imaging the Golden Age: the Coinage of Antonine Pius, in: Papers of the British School at Rome 81 (2013), pp. 211-246, bes. 216 et seq.
