Description

COINS OF THE ROMAN CAISER TIME. Arcadius, 383-408. AV-Solidus, 394/395, Mediolanum; 4,49 g. Draped bust r. with Perldiadem//Emperor stands r., with standard and Victoria on globe, foot on prisoner. RIC 35 b. Winz. Schrötlings error at the edge and scratch, very beautiful-excellent The interesting piece was coined between the Battle of Frigidus and the death of Theodosius I. Arcadius had already been elevated to Augustus by Theodosius in 383. After the death of Valentinianus II, Theodosius I did not appoint a new Augustus for the West; the military master Arbogast had former grammar and rhetoric teacher Eugenius proclaimed Augustus. In response, Theodosius appointed ten-year-old Honorius Augustus. From the bloody battle at Frigidus between Theodosius and Eugenius, which had the character of a religious war and which was to have devastating consequences due to the extensive destruction of the core troops of the West, Theodotius I emerged as the victor, but survived the battle only four months. After his death, Honorius ruled the West of the Empire, Arcadius the East, which cemented the administrative division of the empire for a long time.
