Draped bust r. with perldiadem//VICTORIA AVGVSTORV Victoria goes r., head l. turned, with wreath and cross globe, r. Star. RIC 914 var. Min. circumcised, wink. Scratches, good very nice From the collection of a Hanseatic Roman friend.Exemplar of the auction Fritz Rudolf Künker 168, Osnabrück 2010, No. 7966.Apart from the short interruption by Iohannes (423-425), both parts of the Roman Empire were ruled by members of the Theodosian dynasty until the 450s. They mostly did not lead their troops themselves to the numerous battles of this time, which strengthened the supremacy of important commanders such as Stilicho and Aspar. Tarasicodissa (later Emperor Zeno) of the West Anatolian tribe of the Isaurians also served as a magister militum under Emperor Leo I and was married to his daughter Ariadne. The son Leo II, born from this connection, followed his grandfather Leo I on the Byzantine imperial throne. Shortly thereafter, his father Zeno was appointed fellow emperor. Leo II, however, died shortly afterwards in November of the year 474, which seriously endangered his father's legitimacy. His mother-in-law Verina tried to establish a counter-emperor with Basiliscus and the Thracian Goths supported the overthrow in the imperial palace. Nevertheless, Zeno was able to maintain his position of power. After the death of Julius Nepos, who had already been expelled from Italy in 475, he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire in 480.
