Description

Grant, Corrie. Four letters from various correspondents, comprising: Bannerman, Sir Henry Campbell. Autograph letter signed, discussing engagements: ‘Dear Sir, I have not been able to reply to your letter sooner, as I could not be sure what my plans & engagements would be for the coming month. I am still unable to make any promise as to dates and therefore cannot give you an answer, but I fear it will be practically impossible for me to undertake any considerable part in your campaign. I have political engagements in Scotland, & some in England, which will fully occupy me till Christmas. All that Mr. Ellis spoke to us of was one speech in London — place to be determined by him and day (necessarily) by me: but I did not promise to join in your School Board Campaign because I well knew that my possibilities were already heavily mortgaged. Yours truly, H. Campbell-Bannerman’, 3 pages, on headed stationary for Belmont Castle, Meigle. N.B., 177 x 112mm, 22 Oct 1894; Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery. Typed letter signed, declining an invitation to participate in School Board politics, ‘…I have more reasons for this than I care to give…’ with a manuscript response from Corrie verso, dated ‘Dec 1 93’, seeking to persuade, ‘…I am not proposing an addition to your burdens but the possibility of another slight additional duty next year…’, 1 page, on headed stationary for 38 Berkeley Square, 227 x 178mm, 29 November 1893 ; Fowler, Henry M., Autograph letter signed, declining an invitation: ‘My Dear Sir, I did not receive your letter of the 15th until I returned home, but the purpose of it was conveyed to me by Mr Carston to whom I explained the reasons which compelled me to decline your invitation & which he was good enough to say he would convey to you. Yours Sincerely, Henry H Fowler’, 1 page, 180 x 112mm, 19 October 1894 ; Morley, John. Autograph letter signed, declining an invitation: ‘Dear Mr. Corrie Grant, I am most reluctantly compelled to beg you to excuse me for non-compliance with your two requests. I cannot come to a meeting in London, because I shall not be there during the contest, or only for Cabinets, and my hands are full of my own work. The direction of money is less absolutely impossible, but I have more demands than I can satisfy. I am sorry to be so negative, but I have no choice. Yours Sincerely, John Morley, 2 pages, 185 x 123mm, 24 September 1894 . (4). Condition: Campbell Bannerman - pinholes left edge, some fading. Rosebery - Pinholes throughout, discolouration. Fowler and Morley - pinholes left side. Category: Books, Maps & Manuscripts/Autographs & Manuscripts Estimate: 200-400 GBP
