A Royal Licence granting approval in response to a petition: ‘Whereas Edward Hillman of Lewes in the County of Sussex attorney at law hath by his petition humbly represented unto us what Richard Hore of Newhaven in the county of Sussex sail maker stands committed for trial for felony and his trial is appointed to take place at the Sussex Spring Assize to be holder at Lewes aforesaid on the first day of August proximo. That the petitioner is desirous of having the assistance of Henry Hawkins, Esquire, one of our counsel learned in the law in his defence. The petitioner therefore prays that we will be pleased to grant our royal license and permission for such purpose. We being graciously pleased to condescend to the petitioner’s request do accordingly dispense with the said Henry Hawkins and grant him our Royal licence and permission to be of counsel for the petitioner on the trial of the said indictment as often as there shall be an occasion.
