Description
Churchill, Winston S. Typed letter signed, to [Gerald] Christy, discussing the arrangements for the return of a photograph: ‘Dear Mr Christy, Please see the enclosed. I returned this photograph to the local agent at Newcastle. Will you kindly forward this letter to the Local Agent, ask him what he has done with the photograph, and request him to be so kind as to find Mr Patterson in order that the photograph may be returned.’, signed in ink ‘Yours truly Winston S. Churchill’, with ‘G.W. Patterson, Fawdon, Gosforth’ upper left, in an unknown hand, 1 page, on headed stationary for 105 Mount St, W., 193 x 204mm, 23 March 1901.
Note: On 30 October 1900, Winston Spencer Churchill (1874–1965), then recently elected as Conservative MP for Oldham, began an ambitious tour of England with his ‘lantern’ lecture, ‘The War as I saw it’, recounting his experiences in the Second Boer War. The programme was organised by Gerald Christy and proved a great success, earning Churchill — who was unpaid as an MP at the time — a considerable sum. Here, the lower portion of the sheet has been removed, above (and evidently in comment upon) the excised section, Churchill has written ‘Important’. This letter would appear to predate those to Gerald Christy documented in the Churchill Archives.
Condition: Pinholes above letterhead and to left edge, discolouration and foxing spots.
Category: Books, Maps & Manuscripts/Autographs & Manuscripts
Estimate: 400-600 GBP
