History and Background
The MG Midget debuted in the late 1950s as a compact two-seater roadster in the MG lineup, intended as an affordable sports car in a segment where Austin-Healey and Triumph were also active. The first generations were technically closely related to the Austin-Healey Sprite and were known for their simple construction, light weight, and traditional British design featuring rear-wheel drive and a distinctly sporty driving position. During that period, the Midget became one of the most recognizable names in the small roadster segment.
The 1971 MG Midget belongs to the later series, which had undergone significant technical refinement by that time. During this period, the model had established itself as a compact two-seater convertible with classic proportions. The Midget remained popular thanks to its combination of straightforward engineering and compact exterior dimensions. Many examples have a history of international use, with export to the United States and subsequent return to Europe being quite common. This 1971 MG Midget also originally came from the United States and was imported to the Netherlands from the state of Washington in 1999.
A key factor in the MG Midget’s market position was that the model remained in production for a long time and was therefore offered in various versions and market-specific configurations. Its British charm, compact size, and relatively simple mechanics made the MG Midget a staple among classic British roadsters. This also applies to the 1971 MG Midget, which is a recognizable example of this generation of small sports cars.
Features and Details
This 1971 MG Midget is finished in British Green, a color that complements the model’s classic character. The car features leather seats and a stainless steel exhaust tip. After being imported, the car was repainted by its sole Dutch owner. This has given this particular example a distinct Dutch chapter following its American origins.
Over the past few years, more than €4,500 has been invested to bring the MG Midget into good mechanical condition and maintain it, with invoices from S+S Tuning in Markelo available for inspection. The clutch system was recently overhauled: the master cylinder was rebuilt and the slave cylinder was replaced. The car comes with older invoices, which provide insight into part of its history and maintenance record. The car is in running condition and has a few imperfections, though overall it looks neat.
Summary
The 1971 MG Midget is a classic British roadster of American origin, imported to the Netherlands in 1999 and owned by a single Dutch owner ever since. With the technical work performed, the available invoices, the British Green color, and the added details, this is a well-maintained and historically authentic example.
