Description

MUSIC - JOHANNES BRAHMS Cabinet-style photograph of Brahms by Fritz Luckhardt, K.K. Hofphotograph, Vienna, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE COMPOSER on the reverse to Caroline von Radio ("In freundlicher Erinnerung/ an fröhliches Beisammensein/ J. Brahms" ['In fond remembrance of a joyful gathering]'), and with a later label pasted below on the frame identifying the recipient ("Widmung an Fräulein Caroline von Radio"), silver Art Nouveau style frame by Gourdel Vales & Co. with Birmingham hallmarks for 1904, tarnished, visible image 132 x 82mm., overall 230 x 160mm. Vienna, [c.1885]; together with a later mounted photograph of Tchaikovsky, inscribed on the reverse in Russian by V. N. Kostylev to the film composer Dimitry Tiomkin ("To dear Dmitry Zinovievichin [Tiomkin] in memory of [our] work on the television film 'Tchaikovsky'. March 4, 1970. V. N. Kostylev. Moscow") (2) INSCRIBED CABINET-STYLE PHOTOGRAPH OF BRAHMS, FORMERLY IN THE COLLECTION OF DIMITRI TIOMKIN. The dedicatee of the Brahms portrait, Caroline von Radio, was a pianist in Vienna in the late nineteenth century, and the recipient of at least one communication from the composer, in 1893. There are only two archival records for items relating to von Radio: an empty envelope addressed to her by Brahms, preserved in the Wienbibliothek in Rathaus (it is tempting to imagine that this may have contained our photograph), and a business card addressed to her by Brahms's close friend Julius Epstein, the noted Viennese pianist and teacher. Provenance: First item, Caroline von Radio, inscription to her by Brahms on the reverse; second item, V.N. Kostylev (possibly Vladimir Kostyle, actor/director active at the time, although there is no record of him working on the 1970 film 'Tchaikovsky', a ground-breaking joint US and USSR production); Dimitri Tiomkin, inscription to him from Kostylev on the reverse; both items, Olivia Tiomkin, the composer's widow; private UK collection.
