Description

[NIGHTINGALE (FLORENCE)] One Hundred Choice Hymns in Large Type, PRESENTATION COPY FROM FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, inscribed "Mrs. Bromhead with Florence Nightingale's love from a friend & fellow pilgrim: Lea Hurst, Nov. 12/[18]79" in pencil, on the blank recto of the publisher's advertisement before title-page, 10 flower petals loose between the pages (resulting in some off-setting onto text of approximately 20 leaves), contents shaken, publisher's limp purple cloth, lettered in gilt on the upper cover, worn, 8vo, Edinburgh, James Taylor, 1879 A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE TO A FELLOW PIONEER IN NURSING EDUCATION. After her return from the Crimean War, Nightingale continued to devote her energies to improving nursing practices through her influential writings, and the establishment of the Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas' Hospital in 1860. One the many inspired by her example was Mrs. Anne Bromhead (1812–1886), the likely recipient of Florence's gift, who was a founding member of the Ladies' Nursing Fund, established in 1864 to provide better qualified nurses to Lincoln County Hospital. Bromhead was subsequently made the first Lady Superintendent of the Bromhead Institution for Nurses which was established in her home in 1866. The inscription was written at Lea Hurst, in Derbyshire, where Florence lived as a child. Later on she would visit every summer, until her family sold the house in 1846 and it became a home for retired nurses. After the death of her father in 1874, Florence would often return to Lea Hurst to help look after her mother.
